Assignment 1 - Descriptive Reflection: My English Language Learning Journey

I would consider the proficiency of my English language to be average or below average. This is because I felt that there is a limit to which I ‘stopped’ learning and just using English blindly in my everyday use of the language. Till now, I have realized that I have been speaking with broken English and so do many people around me. There may be the reason of such that as long as there is a mutual understanding between the people I am communicating with then there is no need for speaking in good English. Soon it became a habit and it’s been 5-6 years since I last attended an English class.

My English language learning journey started from home, at the age before kindergarten. At that point of time, my mum was a housewife and homemaker then, therefore she was the one who guided me through my first steps of many things in my life. As English is the first language spoken in my home, my mum taught me many basics of English such as pronunciation and spelling of simple things I would commonly see around me. Afterwards most of my English education were imparted by the teachers of the schools and classes I attended.

Through kindergarten and primary school, the English classes I attended have aided me in improving my ability to spell, read and communicate in English. Moving further to secondary school, I have learnt English mostly through the mistakes I made. I felt that what I have been taught then were similar to a “crash course”, whereby I am given a task or assignment and then corrected of the mistakes I made in it and therefore learning from it. I have noticed that I did improve my English language through watching the television, reading the news and communicating with the people around me.

In my opinion, I feel that English is important in the aspect of reading, writing and communicating as it is a commonly used language in many things in our lives. English is the first language of most schools, countries and also the websites we browsed and surfed. Currently I am attending a module of ES1102, where I aim to improve and refresh the use of English through this module so as to enhance the way I write for my assignments and communicating with my peers and mentors in school.
